What to bring for fishing?
Depending on what you want to target, there are a few differences in the equipment you will want to bring.
Hooks for big game
Fisherman have different styles of fishing so it really depends on your preferences to use J hooks or circle hooks. In slow moving water or stagnate water, circle hooks work the best. If you are not used to circle hooks, then stick to the J seeing how you would be likely to pull the hook out of the fish’s mouth
For fast moving rivers, the J hook is more efficient in hooking. Using the natural flow of water, the fish generally hooks themselves.
For catfish or big pacu, I recommend size 6/0 or 7/0 .
I recommend bringing weight slides and swivels equal in size.
We have lead for sale for weights if you want to avoid the heavy bags
Big river fishing requires a sturdy reel and pole. I wouldn’t use anything less than 50lb test braid. The reels we rent are OKUMA Avenger ABF and sturdy catfish poles.
Casting for bass and other sporty fish.
Baitcasting reels are the strongest option for this type of fishing, it is important to have a good pound test on the reel, nothing less than 30lb braid should suffice.
Many times you will need to horse the fish out of the logs and snags before it is lost so choose your line wisely.
I recommend tying your lures on but if you must use swivels, let them be coast lock and high tensile to avoid any losses.
Lures: Spoons Spinners and buzz baits are great, gold and silver are coveted colors and it is nice to have a chartreuse option if all else fails. I highly recommend a bit of fish meat on any hook to sweeten the deal.
Blue fox Vibrax spinners lures make an extra noise to attract the fish in the turbid water
Rattletraps are another fantastic option, chrome, gold, chartreuse and even white are good for calling attention to many species of fish.
Surface lures are good to , poppers, torpedoes, spooks all are good when the fish are biting on the surface

Anthony and his crew are very passionate not only about fishing but also about conservation. This was my 2nd Trip with Otorongo and it was incredible. We caught a wide of fish (redtail catfish, freshwater rays, peacock bass, Oscar, piranha and several others). Give them a try and you won’t be dissatisfied.
